Dealing with gender bias in Tech.
Half of women working in STEM jobs report experiencing discrimination at work, and that number climbs to 74% for women working in computer jobs. This is largely due to a lack of representation of women in computer science disciplines, which are male-dominated. As a result, half of women who enter a tech field leave it by the age of 35.
Women who go the startup route can also expect to encounter pushback, particularly from VC funders, who I believe tend to see women-owned companies through a lens of higher risk and lower return. That’s probably at least one of the reasons behind the dismal fact that in 2021, female founders secured only 2% of venture capital in the U.S. — the smallest share since 2016.
It’s been my experience that a woman pursuing a career in tech has a better chance of success if she’s willing to let go of a few self-limiting beliefs.
I’ve always believed that people should follow their dreams and go after what they want in life. This is especially true for women in the tech industry. If it takes a little extra effort to get where you want to be, it will be worth it in the end. Not only will you achieve your goals, but you’ll also be able to help other women achieve theirs.
